Allston Retail Initiative Report

JGL was selected as the retail consultant for the master planning effort undertaken by the Harvard University Allston Development Group. This entity is responsible for the development of 200+ acres in Boston, on the opposite side of the river from the main campus in Cambridge. This part of Allston is designated for campus expansion for the next 50 years. The area is currently very low density, adjacent to a residential neighborhood but with no historic or contextual buildings, and along a main truck and car route. JGL identified potential activity zones (denoted in the graphic) that could act as a catalyst to further development in the near and immediate future; and recommended potential development scenarios. Design guidelines were suggested for existing buildings that are currently being leased by the University as well as retrofits for retail uses on the ground floors of office buildings, a gas station, and new retail and cafes for the first building, a science complex. JGL is currently finishing a booklet for the Allston Group to use as a kit of tools as they move along in the process of planning and development.
